Instrumenting a Pre-CAN Car

A 240 has no data bus to decode. Every gauge reading has to come from a real sensor, which means the interesting engineering is in the harness and the signal conditioning, not the software.

Repairing a Frayed Loom the Factory Way

A complete harness is expensive and often unnecessary. There are repair-level parts in the catalogue — individual terminals, connector housings, sleeving, repair kits — and there is an official position on what you're allowed to do to a damaged loom.

This one is free, because it’s the single most useful skill for buying Volvo parts and it’s our explanation rather than the factory’s. The parts catalogue decides whether a part fits your car using terse notes attached to each row. Learn to read them and you stop ordering wrong parts.

Chassis ranges

Where your car sits

Your chassis number is the serial portion at the end of the VIN. A note reading “up to 269999” means production changed after that unit; “270000 onward” is the other side of the same change. Bounded ranges appear too. Find which side you're on and half the variants disappear.

Which plant built it

Some notes qualify a chassis range by factory code, because plants changed at different units. The same chassis number can land on opposite sides of a split depending on where the car was assembled — so a range alone isn't always enough.

The easy win

Left- and right-hand-drive cars route looms differently, so many harnesses exist in both hands. This is the cheapest filter available and it removes a surprising number of candidates immediately.

Option splits

How the car was specified

Audio tier, telephone, navigation, park assist, tow bar, seat type — each changes what the loom has to carry. Notes in the same category are alternatives; notes from different categories must all hold at once.

Engine lists

Named, not implied

Engine-specific parts list their engine codes explicitly. If your engine code isn't in the list, the part isn't for your car — regardless of what the model and year suggest.

Informational notes

Not every note restricts

Some notes are guidance rather than a filter — “also order two of this clip”, a fuse rating, a dimension. Reading these as restrictions is a common way to wrongly rule out the correct part.

Most wrong-part orders aren’t bad luck. They’re an unread note.
