A frayed section is not a reason to buy a complete loom. Volvo publishes a full cable-repair methodology — stripping, splicing, crimping, terminal replacement, connector work and ground-point restoration — with an explicit position on what’s allowed. This is that curriculum, mapped to the harnesses on our car.
01 The factory position
This matters, because plenty of forum wisdom says “never splice, always replace”. The manual disagrees — it documents approved splicing, crimping and terminal-replacement methods in detail. What it cares about is that you do it the right way: the correct joint for the location, the correct crimp, and moisture protection where the harness sees weather.
An interior splice and an engine-bay splice are not the same repair. Harnesses that see weather — engine compartment, both bumpers, rear axle, front ABS sensor, tow bar — call for insulated moisture-proof butt connectors, not a bare crimp.
The methodology is crimp-led. There’s a document specifically on when soldering is permitted versus when a crimped terminal is required — and a pair of documents showing correct versus incorrect crimps side by side.
A single backed-out or corroded terminal can be extracted and replaced without touching the rest of the harness — there are factory tools and a documented procedure for exactly that, per housing type.
“Never splice” is folklore. The factory manual has fifteen pages on how to do it right.

04 Repair-side parts
Volvo's official position is that repairing a harness is expected, not exceptional — VIDA carries a dedicated chapter, “Section 3 (37) Cable repairs”, opening with: “This Service Manual is for the repair and replacement of cables in an existing cable harness.” Two hard rules: the SRS (airbag) harness has its own sanctioned kit + tools and no other method, and a badly damaged loom should be replaced rather than bodged.
Insulated, moisture-proof butt connectors, colour-coded by wire gauge. Crimp both ends, then heat: the internal glue melts and seals the joint. This covers the majority of P3 signal wiring.

Individual crimp terminals to replace a single backed-out or corroded pin without touching the rest of the loom. Catalogued by connector width (WI) and wire gauge; tin, silver or gold plating; with or without a single-wire seal (sws). Match the terminal to the housing you're repairing.
For the runs you can't just splice — coax, USB, video and the safety-critical looms come as pre-terminated cables in a kit.
Volvo's crimps are gauge-specific — the wrong crimp is explicitly shown as wrong in the manual. These are the tools the procedures assume you own.

05 Likely suspects
Harnesses don’t fray at random. They fail at flex points, at heat, and at the places water finds. If you’re hunting for damage, start here — and tell me which of yours are actually frayed so this list becomes your car’s, not a general one.
Driver’s and passenger door harnesses cross the hinge and flex every single time the door opens. The rubber boot cracks, water gets in, and the wires inside work-harden and break. Classic P3 failure.
The engine and engine-compartment harnesses live in heat and vibration. Insulation goes brittle, tape lets go, and looms rub through where they’re routed against a bracket or the block.
Tailgate, rear bumper and rear-axle looms sit in the splash zone and the crumple zone. A rear-end knock — like the one on this car’s job list — is exactly where hidden harness damage hides.
