02 Factory documentation
Volvo’s dealer workshop system is the authoritative answer to almost any question about one of these cars — every removal procedure, wiring diagram, torque figure, component location, special tool and part number. It runs on a workshop laptop in the corner of the room.
01 What’s in it
Not a summary of the factory manual — the factory manual. Text and every diagram, for roughly 1999 through 2015, which happily covers both of our cars’ eras of interest and a great deal more besides.
Step-by-step, with the diagrams inline and the notes and warnings the factory considered necessary. Written for someone with the car on a lift, not for a marketing brochure.
The circuit-level truth — which pin, which colour, which connector, which ground point. Indispensable when a loom is damaged and you need to know what actually runs through it.
Torque figures, the special tools a job assumes you own, and the materials and chemicals called for by name.
Part numbers with their exploded plates and the applicability small print that decides whether a part fits a given car. This is what the harness catalog is built from.
Diagnostic trouble codes with the factory’s own tracing procedures — the difference between reading a code and understanding it.
The “we know about this” documents. Often the fastest route to a known fault with a known fix, and the first place to look at an intermittent problem.
02 Method
The workshop application is an interface over a database. Clicking through it to reach one procedure takes about three and a half minutes. Querying the database for the same procedure takes under a second — and can be done for the entire library at once.
When the system identifies a vehicle it records a profile set. That set is what filters the library, which is how a document collection for “all Volvos” narrows to the few thousand that apply to your specific car.
A single procedure often contains parallel step groups for several different models. The application silently shows you only the relevant one; read the raw document and you see them all. Miss this and you follow the wrong car's instructions.
Procedures reference their images by filename. Resolving those against the image library and embedding them produces a single self-contained page per procedure — readable offline, on a phone, under a car.
The application was never the product. The database was.
03 Access
This is licensed material, used to maintain our own cars. It isn’t republished and it isn’t indexed — but signed-in Acid Alchamy accounts can search the catalog and request specific documents.
